Thank you for trialling an instrument or bow with us. These terms apply whenever you take an item from Bows for Strings on approval — whether for a teacher appraisal or a trial at home — and you agree to them when you sign your approval form. These items are valuable and often irreplaceable, so please read the terms carefully and ask us about anything that isn't clear.

Ownership and return

  1. The items remain the property of Bows for Strings until paid for in full.
  2. You will return every item — including cases and accessories — by the return date and time on your approval form, to our Glen Waverley showroom during our opening hours.
  3. Any extension must be agreed with us in advance. Extension requests must be made in writing, and we reserve the right to refuse any request.
  4. We may ask for the items back at any time, and you will return them within 24 hours of our request.
  5. If the items are not returned by the agreed date, we may treat this as a purchase and charge the full listed price.

Care and handling

  1. Keep the items in their case whenever they are not being played.
  2. Never leave the items in a car, near heaters or air-conditioning vents, in direct sunlight (including through a window), or anywhere damp.
  3. Always keep the items out of reach of pets, and of children when not supervised.
  4. If the item is being trialled by a child, a parent or guardian must supervise whenever it is out of its case.
  5. Remove watches, rings and bracelets before handling.
  6. Do not adjust or repair anything — including the bridge, soundpost, pegs, strings or bow hair. If something moves or breaks, call us.
  7. Loosen the bow hair after each use and never overtighten. Any bow returned wound up, or showing signs of overtightening, will be inspected by our workshop and any damage charged under clause 18.
  8. Only you, and your teacher in your presence, may play the items. Do not lend them or leave them in anyone else's care.

Permitted use

  1. The items are for home trial and teacher appraisal only.
  2. They must not be used for any performance, recording, competition, audition, or exam or assessment (including AMEB, school and tertiary assessments).

Loss, damage and insurance

  1. The items are not insured by Bows for Strings once they leave our store. You are responsible for them from the moment they leave until our staff have inspected them on return.
  2. You are responsible for any loss, theft or damage during that time, however it is caused and by whoever causes it.
  3. If an item is lost or stolen, you will pay its full listed price. If it is damaged, you will pay the cost of repair and any loss in value, or the full listed price if it cannot be repaired.
  4. Tell us immediately about any loss or damage. Theft must also be reported to police.
  5. We recommend checking whether your home contents insurance covers borrowed valuables.
